Alastair Cook, England’s record Test run scorer and iconic batter, left an indelible mark on the world of cricket with his illustrious career. His Test career is often remembered for his feats against Australia, but arguably his most iconic moments and best performances were saved for another opponent. Here, we delve into the key moments of Cook's career against India, from his debut to his final innings, his Test best score and his remarkable success in the 2012 series.

Debut Brilliance (Nagpur, 2006):

Cook's journey against India began in Nagpur in March 2006. Stepping in as a 21-year-old at two days’ notice, he showcased remarkable calmness and composure. A first innings half-century showed he wouldn’t be fazed; the century he scored in the second showed his quality. His debut century set the stage for a stellar career and set him on the path to greatness.

Monumental Highest Score (Edgbaston, 2011):

In July 2011, Cook etched his name in the annals of cricket history during the England vs. India series. England were on their way to becoming the number one Test team in the world, with Cook at the top of the order. His monumental knock of 294 at Edgbaston not only reflected his technical prowess, but also demonstrated his mental fortitude. The fact he was so disappointed to not reach 300, showed the drive the impressive opener possessed.

The Pinnacle: 2012 Series Success:

The year 2012 proved to be a defining chapter in Cook's career against India. Leading the English side - on perhaps the toughest tour in Test cricket following Andrew Strauss’s retirement - he guided them to an historic series win. Cook's captaincy and batting were instrumental in England's success, with the team triumphing 2-1.

Having lost the first Test – despite scoring a century – England bounced back thanks to another Cook ton and marked brilliance by a reintegrated Kevin Pietersen and an in-form Monty Panesar.

In Test three, it was Cook’s insatiable thirst for hundreds (190 on this occasion) that propelled his team to victory to take the series lead, while a final match draw was enough to secure an historic triumph.

 Emotional Farewell (The Oval, 2018):

Cook bid farewell to international cricket in grand style at The Oval, in September 2018. In his final Test match – of course against India – he reached a half century in the first innings. There went (we thought, hopes of a truly storybook ending, but the cricketing script writers weren’t done. Cook dug in deep and second time round made no mistake, famously reaching three figures with overthrows to claim his 33rd and final Test match hundred.
