Cricket Helmets - Deep Dive

Trusted by the world’s best

Gray-Nicolls batting helmets were proudly on global display during the recent T20 World Cup, by eight of the world’s best players.

The likes of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Daryl Mitchell wore them with distinction, while in the final Kane Williamson played one of the all-time great T20 innings. The Aussie trio – Marcus Stoinis, Final player of the match Mitch Marsh and captain Aaron Finch all donned the helmet with the red flash.

Putting Your Faith In Us

More than any other piece of kit in your bag, your helmet is an absolute safety essential. We want to reassure you that when you put your faith in a Gray-Nicolls helmet, you are choosing a product with an unbeatable safety record, strenuously tested in both a laboratory and real-world environment.

We don’t take the designing of helmets lightly, and more resource goes into engineering our helmet range than any other product category in the Gray-Nicolls collection.

A Helmet for Everyone

Safety and protection is not just important at the top end of the game, but of paramount importance to parents when they send their children out to play. That’s why we put as much care into our helmets designed for the junior and the recreational game as we do the professional format. If your child is just starting out, the Elite helmet comes in Small Junior sizing and will be perfect for their forays against a hardball, while if you are slightly more advanced, we fully endorse the Atomic and Atomic 360 helmets to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Contoured Peak

You may have noticed that a Gray-Nicolls helmet, more so than any other on the market, has what we call a contoured peak. Essentially the peak of the visor – which on other helmets is flat and projects straight out from the shell – forms a 3-dimensional curved shape, ensuring that any impact will be deflected away from the forehead and temples. In doing so, contact with these key areas is minimised and the remaining force is distributed throughout the rest of the helmet, rather than being concentrated on one specific area.

Fixed Grille

Our helmets have a unique fixed grille, fitted at our factory. This ensures that the helmet’s safety is never compromised by the user incorrectly fastening the grille, or opening up the gap between peak and grille too much, where a ball might otherwise sneak through. In fact, throughout our testing we found the field of vision of our helmets is shown to be one of the the biggest on the market. With any new piece of kit, the fixed grille might take a session or two to get used to, but once you are set, you’ll never look back.

Helmet Designer on Ultimate Pro 360

Our product designer Paul Jenkins responded to a question from a Twitter follower about the Ultimate Pro 360, as worn by Aaron Finch and his Australian teammates. Watch now for his insight:

Fixed or detachable 360 protection

You have a choice of options for all-round protection with Gray-Nicolls. Some helmets in the range have a fixed 360 option directly built out from the grille. This ensures your protection is undetachable, lightweight, and allows for fantastic ventilation. Helmets with this feature are the Atomic 360, Ultimate 360 and Ultimate Pro 360.

On our other helmets you can purchase one of our neck guards separately. The main benefit to a detachable neck guard is in the name – you can detach it if required. Some find these more comfortable to wear, and might choose to remove if they are performing a dual role of wicketkeeper.

Why “Go Pro”?

You’ll have noticed that some of our helmets have the term “Pro” in their names. Why is this? It refers to the material used for the grille. On our pro helmets the grille is made from titanium. Titanium has the dual benefit over our standard steel grille of being both lighter and stronger – offering you greater movement, increased comfort and more protection.
