Quite a common we receive at Gray-Nicolls is around the difference between an expensive cricket bat and a cheap one. The answer is quite nuanced, so we thought we’d tackle it with a short blog post.
Crudely yes, an expensive bat is better than a cheaper one. We stock bats for every price point, meaning you could buy an entry level adult bat for around £120 which will not have the same performance as a Pro Edition bat which retails for around £750.
As you move up the scale of prices, however, and the difference between top end bats and the rest does become smaller.
Our grading is based on aesthetics e.g. number of grains, cleanliness of timber, and the performance potential of the bat.

A top-level bat will look beautiful; lovely straight grains and no or very few blemishes. It will also ping immediately off the bat mallet, indicating that the bat will perform immediately at the crease.
That is perhaps the greatest difference to bats further down the price scale. A Test or 550 grade bat will have fewer grains, and some blemishes on the face. The bat will also require a longer period of preparation and playing in before it reaches its peak level of performance. It doesn’t mean the bat won’t perform as well, it might just take a fraction longer.
So should you buy an expensive bat or will a cheaper one do the job? We always say you should let you budget choose. A Gray-Nicolls bat will never let you down, but if you are able to spend a little more you’ll likely be reaching top performance more quickly
